Immigration minister Sean Fraser to announce measures to strengthen family reunification

In order to strengthen family reunions in Canada, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, will be joined by Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, to unveil initiatives.

Justin Trudeau, the prime minister, provides mandate letters to his ministers outlining the objectives they are expected to achieve while in office. This letter serves as a policy directive for Canada's immigration program. Fraser received a mandate letter from Trudeau in 2021, urging him to fulfill a number of immigration-related promises and goals while serving as the minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

The mandate letter outlined a number of priorities, including a pledge to strengthen family reunification through the introduction of electronic family reunification applications and the implementation of a program that will grant spouses and children living abroad temporary resident status while they wait for their permanent resident application to be processed.

Sponsorship of the family class

Under Canada's Immigration Levels Plan, family-class immigration is the second-largest category. Canada expects to receive 106,500 newcomers in 2023 under the family class category, including 78,000 spouses, partners, and children and 28,500 parents and grandparents. Canada wants to accept 118,000 newcomers under the family category by the year 2025.
