Enhancements to the super visa program that will benefit parents, grandparents

As COVID 19 pandemic is taking a back seat as of now, there are many efforts taken to recover from the effect it had on people’s lives. Government of Canada on June 7th 2022, in Ottawa has released a press release stating the importance on the family reunification.

This step is in a way to attract, retain and integrate all those immigrants who could be a positive contribution to the success and development of the country.

Sean Fraser, honorable minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship has made the announcements to enhance the super visa program effectively. These changes could make it easier for Canadians to unite with their parents, grandparents in Canada, allowing a longer duration of stay for the same. It was mentioned that the enhancements will be put to effect from July 4th 2022.

The different enhancements included in the Super visa program include:

1. Increase of the length of stay for super visa holder to 5 years. This is in addition to the possible extension of the stay for over 2 years while in Canada.

2. There is also the enhancement of covering health insurances for super visa card holders. Currently only Canadian insurance holders can avail necessary medica coverage.

Through Canada's super visa programme, Canadian citizens and permanent residents have been able to rejoin with their parents and grandparents in Canada for prolonged periods of time since 2011. Parents and grandparents have been able to stay in Canada for two years at a time because to this multiple-entry visa, which is good for up to ten years. This makes the super visa more advantageous than an ordinary multiple-entry tourist visa, which has a maximum stay of 6 months.

“We'll continue to uphold our commitment to keeping families together by making the super visa more accessible” mentioned Sean Fraser in the press meet.

There are multiple quotes that honorable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, refugees and Citizenship mentioned in the wake of amazing news.

“Families are at the heart of Canadian society. The enhancements to the super visa program allow family members to reunite for longer in Canada, which helps everyday Canadian citizens and permanent residents succeed and contribute to society, while affording their parents and grandparents invaluable opportunities to spend time with their family in Canada.”

Honorable Marco E.L Mendicino, Minister of Public Safety also put forth how important family reunification is for the Country.

“Reuniting families is a priority for our government and contributes to our success and strength as a country—particularly, as we work to recover from the pandemic and reconnect with our loved ones. I want to thank the Canada Border Services Agency employees who are working with partners to help unite Canadian citizens and permanent residents with their families, while keeping our borders safe and secure.”

Quick points to remember

• The super visa has been a popular and accessible option for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to reunite with their parents and grandparents in Canada for more than a decade. Approximately 17,000 super visas are issued each year by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

• In order for super visa holders to be able to sustain themselves while in Canada, their host kid or grandchild must earn a certain amount of money.

• Parents and grandparents seeking for a super visa must also undergo a medical examination and show proof of private health insurance from an approved insurer. This is so that super visa holders can receive emergency medical care while in Canada while avoiding the cost of those services being passed on to Canadian taxpayers.
